Kaikoura remains an
unspoiled fishing paradise with a large
variety of fish species and good stocks
abundant.
Fish from the many miles of beaches or dangle a line from the
wharf or rocks.
Use your own boat or a charter boat, the
options are there for everyone.
The sea area around Kaikoura is very exposed and the sea and wind
conditions can change very rapidly, check the
weather forecast before you leave the shore.
There are many good launching areas, these
include:

Launching is off a sandy beach, the best launching times are
from half to full tide.

Slipway beside New
Wharf. |
This is a private 2 lane slipway belonging to the Kaikoura
Boating Club.

Slipway
at South
Bay |
This is a private 4 lane slipway also belonging to the
Kaikoura Boating Club.
Both slipways are concrete and can be used at any
tide.
These slipways are locked to non-members; to become a member
please contact the Kaikoura Boating Club Secretary - Yvonne 319-7933 or a
Membership Application Form can be obtained from Kaikoura Mitre

This is the Kaikoura District Council owned slipway, it is
also used by the larger commercial tailored
vessels.
It is a 2 lane concrete that can be used at any
tide.
An
honesty box is provided, the daily charge is $10.00 or the annual is $200.00
(these
fees may change at any time so please check with the
KDC).

Kaikoura South Bay -
You are advised that the entrance to South Bay Marina is very narrow and
is marked by a green buoy which is not visible at night-time or in poor
visibility. In view of this it is
recommended not to enter or leave the harbour during the hours of darkness or
during periods of poor visibility.
Kaikoura Volunteer Coastguard keeps a watch over the Kaikoura
boating area; their watch stretches 50nm to the North and South. In an emergency they should be contacted
via VHF Channel 16 or by phoning 111.
In a non-emergency Kaikoura Volunteer Coastguard can be contacted
directly by phoning 319-5850, please follow the voice instructions. Keep a close watch on the weather, the
sea state can change rapidly especially with a Southerly
change.

various South
Island forecasts are broadcast via
VHF Channel 67 at 05:33,
